[/gn_frame] I grew up in Chestertown, MD where my grandmother made wedding cakes for a living. When I was little, she put buttercream in a piping bag and let me decorate paper plates while she adorned the cake. I thought I wanted to follow in her footsteps. After graduating with a French degree from the University of Florida, I went to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY to study baking and pastry In my first class, “Hearth Breads & Rolls,” I fell in love with making bread. There was a soulfullness about it that wasn’t found in the fancy cakes. I found I wanted to make something that appeared on the family dinner table every night rather than a special occasion show piece.

After baking up and down the east coast (Wegmans, Bread Alone, Amy’s Bread, The Ritz-Carlton) my family and I made a home for ourselves in Montclair. Kevin stayed at home with our two kids, Josie & Keegan while I went to work developing bread recipes for Tribeca Oven. When I was pregnant with our third, Malachi, I started attending prenatal yoga classes where I met a great group of local moms. Once a week, I invited the “bread moms” into our home to pick up loaves I baked. It was through this network of moms that Kevin and I found out about an opportunity to take over the local bread company.
